Defeated Japan was occupied by the Allied Forces. Japanese society underwent enormous changes. Reforms to dismantle militarism and democratize Japan commenced, and a new Japanese Constitution went into effect in May 1947.
During this democratic revolution, a “press code” was instituted in September 1945 to keep the press from publishing information seen as detrimental to the occupation. This press code kept the wider Japanese public ignorant of most information related to atomic bomb damage.
