Construction of the museum began in 1951. It was often suspended due to the lack of funds.

The Cenotaph, officially called “Memorial Monument for Hiroshima, City of Peace” has a burial mound shape. The construction commenced 
in March 1952, and the unveiling ceremony was held on August 6 that year.
