The possibility that radiation could affect the children of those who were exposed has been a concern since the bombing. It has prompted several surveys focusing on congenital disorders, chromosomal abnormalities, cancer risk, and so forth. Although no harmful effects have been found, the surveys continue. Cancer studies in particular will be stepped up as second-generation survivors reach the age of increased cancer incidence.
