At 11:02 AM on August 9, 1945, an atomic bomb that used plutonium-239 was exploded on Nagasaki. This bomb exploded approximately 500 meters over the Urakami district of Nagasaki City. Direct damage from the heat ray and blast was limited to the Urakami district; a mountain ridge shielded the city center. Nearly 36 percent of the 51,000 buildings in Nagasaki were damaged or destroyed, and by the end of December 1945, around 74,000 people had died.
