From the end of July to the beginning of August 1977, the International Symposium on the Damage and After-Effects of the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was held in several Japanese cities. This symposium sponsored by international NGOs was held in anticipation of the first UN Special Session on Disarmament in 1978.
The Japan Preparatory Committee, comprising doctors, researchers, and grassroots organizations, conducted a massive survey of approximately 10,000 A-bomb survivors to ascertain their medical situations and record their life stories.
