Even during the occupation, Japanese doctors were already studying A-bomb illnesses. After the San Francisco Peace Treaty ended the occupation, A-bomb illness research began in earnest, leading to a rapid increase in publications. In 1959, many doctors participated in the first meeting of the Research Committee on A-bomb Aftereffects held in Hiroshima. Doctors have since continued to search for effective treatments.
