The atomic bomb caused horrendous damage. Thousands of victims were housed in relief stations or recuperating in their homes, but daily life never stopped. As Japan shifted from war to occupation, its people started the long journey to recovery.

On August 9 the streetcar line between Koi and Nishi-temma restarted services in one direction, and one month after the bombing the lines between Koi and Hatchobori, and Ujina and Hiroden Honsha-mae were restarted. Recovery of all lines was complete by December.

'Standing' beer bars

In front of Hiroshima Station, Yokogawa Station and other locations around the city bars were set up where people could stand and drink beer. Although they only operated for one hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon, they were so popular that people lined up to get in.
