Immediately after the bombing, large numbers of people entered the city to help with rescue and relief activities or to look for family members. Many who came into the city center in the days soon after the bombing were affected by residual radiation.

Gas mask

Tadashi Karakawa (then, 28) had been working at the Kure Naval Arsenal. Around August 7, he entered Hiroshima City wearing this gas mask, to search for his younger brother Ryuzo.

Takumi Nakamura (then, 45) of the civil defense team of Yasu Village used this hook to pull out the corpses that were floating in the river.
