Zaimoku-cho (now, Nakajima-cho)

A lack of funds due to significant cuts in government subsidies and price appreciation often suspended construction work of Peace Memorial Facilities. On the west side of the prolonged construction site for Peace Memorial Museum, a woman with a little child in a cart is collecting garbage from a house vacated by its residents.

Zaimoku-cho (now, Nakajima-cho)

A woman, during a break in land-clearing operations, feeding her child whom she had brought with her. In families, the loss of breadwinners due to the war and the A-bombing meant that child-rearing women also had to go out and find work.

Even three years after commencing construction of Peace Memorial Park, approximately 20 houses, including stores, remained in the area of Motoyasu Bridge. The enforced evacuation began from March 1955. The shack closer on the right is a cheap restaurant now closed down. In the rope-separated area behind the restaurant, land-clearing operation was finished and trees were planted.
