In 1902, a Higher Normal School opened in Hiroshima to train teachers. The only other such school in Japan was in Tokyo. The Hiroshima University of Literature and Science opened in 1929. Hiroshima became a leading city of learning, with numerous private schools and institutions of higher education, including a technical college and women’s colleges.
