5-3-2-3Suffering around Nuclear Test Sites

At the test site of the former Soviet Union near Semipalatinsk (now, Semey) 456 nuclear tests were conducted between August 29, 1949 and 1989. Clouds containing radioactive materials rose into the sky and spread outside the nuclear test site, contaminating local communities.
Residents in villages surrounding the nuclear test site have testified that, after exposure, they experienced headache, fatigue, hair loss and other symptoms. They have also testified that many of their relatives died young from cancer.
