Hydrogen bomb tests at the Bikini Atoll exposed many Japanese fishing boats. The tuna boat Lucky Dragon No. 5 was coated with the “ashes of death” from the “Bravo” explosion, and the crew developed symptoms of radiation poisoning, including headache, diarrhea, bleeding gums, and hair loss. Their faces, arms and other exposed skin sustained burns. All were hospitalized on returning to port. Six months later, chief radio operator Aikichi Kuboyama died. An extensive swath of the Pacific Ocean was contaminated with radioactivity, and numerous Japanese fishing boats were affected.
