5-2-5-5Leukemia and Cancers due to Radiation Exposure
Over the ensuing years, victims died in increasing numbers from leukemia, cancer and related disorders. Leukemia incidence began to increase two to three years after exposure, peaking seven to eight years after the bombing. Thereafter, leukemia abated, but excess risk continues. The latency period for cancer is long, so increased occurrence probably began five to ten years after the bombing.
