5-2-5-4Acute Effects and Aftereffects

Symptoms that appeared shortly after the atomic bombing are termed “acute effects.” Besides radiation-related disorders, survivors commonly suffered burns from the heat ray, external wounds from the blast, and/or malnutrition due to food shortages and lack of medical supplies.
Over time, cancers presumably caused by the radiation and other aftereffects occurred with increasing frequency.
