5-2-1-1Hiroshima in Ruins

October 5, 1945 Photo by Shigeo Hayashi

The explosion occurred 600 meters in the sky almost directly over downtown Hiroshima. The damage spread out concentrically across the entire city. The heat ray ignited houses in and near the center. Flames and cook fires leaping from destroyed kitchens quickly whipped into a vast conflagration that completely combusted everything within two kilometers of the hypocenter. Nearly 92 percent of the city’s 76,000 buildings were destroyed or badly damaged, and by the end of December 1945, around 140,000 people had died.
