The Bikini Incident of March 1, 1954 triggered an enormous movement in Japan to ban nuclear weapons. The First World Conference against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs (held in the Hiroshima City Auditorium for three days starting August 6, 1955) drew 2,600 participants from 15 countries. On the last day the Conference adopted a Declaration that called for assisting survivors and a ban on atomic and hydrogen bombs.
